I know it has been forever since I have posted on this blog, but this is an urgent request. Our sweet friends, almost, 4 month old daughter has been sick for the last 2 months. She has been in and out of the hospital, received numerous blood and platelet transfusions, had a bone marrow aspiration, a bone marrow biopsy, a central port placed, and just recently a liver biopsy. The results of the biopsy were not positive and they are being sent to the Cincinnati Children's Hospital for further testing. Please, please keep sweet Bellamy, and her parents, in your prayers. They are needed now, more than ever!

This necklace is made with a gorgeous faceted glass briolette measuring in at about one inch. Paired with a sweet sea turtle charm, and hung from an 18 inch sterling silver chain. The glass briolette is rather interesting in color, it will look purple in natural light (first picture) and blue in indoor light (second picture).

So I know that this may be a little later than I had said, but better late than never. ;) This necklace was actually made for a friend of mine for her birthday, from her mom. It might look a little familiar because her sister got one too back in December in a different color. I am so excited because this weekend this little beauty will be a new piece in my shop.

This necklace is going to be completely customizable from the color of the glass beads, to the clasp, to the color of the pearls. Since it is going to be a custom piece there will be a 2-3 week turn around time to allow all the materials to be ordered and received. This piece will make a fantastic bridal necklace, cocktail necklace or can be even dressed down to wear with your favorite pair of jeans. DIY Day

DIY Day - Body Scrub!!! You need only four ingredients to make these moisturizing exfoliants. The base can be made from either Epsom salts or sugar, depending on whether you want a large or fine grain. Color the scrubs with shades that are in keeping with some of the scents you use -- pink with grapefruit, for example, or green with eucalyptus. Makes about 2 1/3 cups.

Tools and Materials
2 cups Epsom salts, organic cane sugar, or regular cane sugar
1 cup oil (Jojoba, Almond, Grapeseed, Olive, Sunflower)
8 drops essential oil(s)
1 drop food coloring
Special equipment: glass jars

Directions
1. Stir together Epsom salts or sugar and oil in a bowl, mixing well.
2. Using a dropper, add essential oil, 1 drop at a time. Add food coloring, and stir until color is even throughout. Spoon into glass jars (preferably with a seal).
3. Make and cut out pretty labels, and affix to clean jars. Enjoy!

DIY Day

This is the first in a series of how-to's for DIY holiday gifts! With the holidays fast approaching many of us are feeling the strain of the economy and trying to figure out more economical alternatives to gift giving. These options will not only allow you to save money but also give someone a personal gift that you will be proud to say you did on your own. So without further ado our first DIY project is Felted Soap!

This idea was given to me by Family Fun Magazine. Materials you will need for this project:

Wool batting or roving
Round or oval bar of soap
Pantyhose

How to's:

Pull, don't cut, tufts of wool fiber from your batting or roving. Spread them out in several thin, crisscrossing layers about twice as large as your bar of soap. (Oval or round soaps work best.)
Wrap the bar with the wool layers so that it's entirely covered. Add a stripe in a contrasting color, if desired.
To keep the wool in place, put the wrapped bar in the toe of a pair of pantyhose.
Dip the wrapped bar into a bowl of hot water.
Gently pat the wool all over the bar. When suds start appearing, remove the bar from the hose.
Continue to gently pat and squeeze the wool over the bar. Dip it in the hot water when it gets too sudsy.
To see if the wool is completely felted, try the pinch test: if the fibers easily separate from the bar of soap, it's not done. When the felt feels solid, rinse the bar in cold water, squeeze it in a towel, and set it aside. The wool will shrink up a bit more as it dries.

Now if you aren't adventurous enough to try this project or you just like to buy from some fabulous artisans than may we suggest a few of our favorite etsians!

These are a few pictures from my first craft fair (please excuse the lighting...it was in a gym). I had a great time and I feel like my first craft fair was a pretty big success. Hopefully next time I go to a craft fair it will be Amanda and I from Dawn Correspondence putting together a table.

But so worth it!!! I had the pleasure of being included in the Steward School Spartafest Bazaar the last three days and I had a wonderful time. Sales were good, especially for a first timer. I did come home with a good bit of inventory that I will keep me busy for the next week photographing. I also met some very fabulous people this weekend including my new wonderful friend Amanda from Dawn Correspondence. Amanda and her mom, Rhonda, kept me entertained for the three days and I am so glad I made such a wonderful new business connection and friend. I am hoping that in the future there will be some collaborating going on between us. :) Well, I am beat and ready for bed. I will be sure to post some pictures of the booth as well as some pictures of the new items including....rings and sweet hairpins!!! Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Lately I have been less than happy at the sales that my shop has been producing. I know that the economy is really bad right now and I sure do feel the impact. So in trying to get some more traffic and hopefully some more sales I will be closing the shop Thursday the 23rd for some reconstruction. We will reopen at the beginning of next week with some fresh new looks and a new piece that I am very excited to reveal. Our second featured artist for June is the lovely Manyi from Illinois. Manyi is the fabulous designer behind MAU Promos and MAU Studio both on etsy.

Her MAU Promos shop features stickers in round, square and oval shapes. She also does graphic design, mint tins, tags, place cards, invites, and business cards. This shop is the perfect place to visit if you are getting married, having a baby shower, a bridal shower, need address labels or just want something custom. Want to learn a little more about Manyi? So did we! Here are some questions that we asked her to let us get to know her a little better.

How did you get started in crafting? "I've been crafting since I was little. I don't remember when I started and how I started. I always enjoy making jewelry, origami, greeting cards, etc. "

What is your favorite material to work with and why? "Paper. I'm a graphic designer and I specialize in print graphics. The different color, texture of paper, patterns make me excited. Paper packaging can transform a product and make it marketable, cute stationery and paper are collectible. Stickers and cards are great for parties, showers, weddings, etc. I can go on and on about paper. "

How did you choose your business name? "MAUstudio is my business name. MAUpromos is only a part of it. MAU is a combination of my initial and last name. In Chinese, MAU means cat, and cat is one of my favorite animals."

How did you find etsy? "When I first started my business, I didn't know there is a large community of craft businesses. I started out with my own website selling my jewelry and cards and started researching online. I found some forums and ETSY came up many times. So I decided to start my own shop on ETSY. My first shop on ETSY is www.maustudio.etsy.com and now www.maupromos.etsy.com"

What is your favorite crafting tip? "Hum....it's okay to be inspired by other crafters' ideas, but don't copy them and then claim them as yours. Incorporate your own style and make your craft unique. If you are selling your crafts, your customers do not want to see the same things that they can buy in stores, your craft must be unique in some ways. Just have fun! "

Anything else you would like to share with our fabulous readers? "I'm the owner and designer of MAUstudio.com, a consignment shop online that works with many crafters and artists. We are always looking for new talents to join our shop.
I'm also a graphic designer. I specialize in print and branding. I've done many logos, business cards, ETSY banners, animated blog banners for crafters in the indie craft community. I've also done a few websites."

A few weeks ago before heading out to the wedding we were attending I decided I needed a new clutch and found this little beauty from Etsy artist Gold Crest Bags. Not only did Miriam deliver on a great product at a very affordable price but she also got this clutch to me super quick (since I wait until the last minute). Our first featured artist for June comes from the great state of Colorado. I'd like you all to meet Tatiana of Tatiana Rene Photography. This woman does absolutely fabulous work and when we saw her shop we knew we had to spread the word!!

We asked Tatiana to let us in on a little of her life and she happily obliged with her great answers to our questions:

How did you get started in photography? "As a child, I always loved the camera. I began modeling school when I was 9, so the camera has always been a part of my life. When I moved to Colorado during 7th grade, modeling was no longer a part of my life because I lived in a very small town tucked away in the Rocky Mountains. Modeling was unheard of there, plus it was too far away from any large city. So, I began taking pictures of my friends and family. When I moved to Hawaii after high school, I fell in love with landscapes. I have been taking pictures since. "

How did you choose your business name? "Tatiana Rene Photography. First and middle name. Simple. I love the name that my parents gave to me, so I decided to keep it as my business name as well. I mean, Kandinsky and Picasso didn't change their names on their artwork. =]"

How did you find etsy? "My mom actually started my Etsy site for me. She read an article somewhere about people being successful on Etsy from selling their artwork. So, she was really excited about getting my artwork out there and started my site. Kelela means Cheryl in Hawaiian. Cheryl is my mother's name. I could have started a completely different shop with my own name, but I love my family so much, so I wanted to keep my mother's Hawaiian name on my shop. Family is number one to me. They will be there for you no matter what happens."

What is your favorite crafting tip? "Photoshop to brighten and sharpen contrast is my love. You can take a great picture, but it will be even greater if you Photoshop it up a little bit. But I don't like to "over-Photoshop" it. Using filters and altering pictures too much tends to take away from the actual shot. "

What inspires you? "Everything inspires me. When I look at things, I imagine what it would look like in a photograph. I'm not kidding. I take pictures with my eyes before I actually take the photograph. Although flowers are somewhat cliche, I do love photographing them. Most of my work is centered around flowers and landscapes. Only recently have I began breaking away from that and started to become more urbanized in my work."

Is there anything else that you would like our fabulous readers to know about you? "I really want to be a fashion photographer someday, but my introvertedness tends to get in the way. I get super nervous taking pictures of people. I hope to overcome that fear. Someday you will find me at the end of runways in New York and Paris. =] "

Edible Favors

Edible favors are all the rage right now. They are the one thing that, when given at a wedding as a favor, doesn't get left behind when guests leave. We had the lovely pleasure of attending a beautiful wedding in Pittsburgh this past weekend for Lauren and Matt. Not only did this wonderful couple have a box of chocolatey goodness at each table setting but they also had a cookie buffet!

I'm not sure if this is a new favor trend or not but this is the first time that I had seen it done. And let me tell you, if you want your guests to get up and mingle around, this buffet will do it. I have never seen so many adults migrate to one spot so quickly...well except for an open bar. :)

Featured Artist- Paper Cakes by Rachel

When we first saw these yummy paper cakes we knew we had to feature Rachel! I mean why wouldn't we?! It's all the decadence and none of the guilt! Rachel is a stay at home Mom of two small children. She loves doing crafts because it allows her to be creative. She also loves ALL handmade items because they have such a personal touch to them.

We asked Rachel how she got started in crafting, "I started making paper cakes when I was asked to be in charge of the party favors and centerpieces for my Father-in-laws surprise birthday party. It just really blossomed out from there because after the party I was getting calls asking for cakes. I really enjoy making them because there are so many possibilities!"
What is your favorite material to work with and why? "Ribbon is my favorite because I just think that it is soooo beautiful and there are so many different kinds! It can really dress-up just about anything and is so easy to work with!!! :)"
Where is your business based? "My business is based out of my house. It is starting taking over more and more space!" Do you have a dedicated work space, and what do you love about it? "I do have a dedicated space and what I love the most it is the ribbon holder that my husband had made for me!"
What inspires you? "Oh my gosh.... so much inspires me! Just a couple are my children, my customers, real cakes, and the design and color combination of clothing."
What is your favorite crafting tip? "Less is more when using a hot glue gun." What is your favorite supply store and why? "I love Hobby Lobby! Just so much to choose from at really good sale prices!

I've taken the pledge to write about a person in the wedding industry I admire. This pledge was brought about by http://www.bridetide.com/ and as soon as I heard about it I knew that I had to do it. So without further ado, today I give you Kristin from iDoOriginals.

Kristin launched iDoOriginals in 2006 as an affordable avenue for brides to completely personalize every aspect of their own special day. She actually started her business after making her own wedding personal with great monograms and carried that over to other brides she met on the knot. Remembering

This week weighs heavy on my heart. Thursday April 16th marks the second anniversary of the horrible events that took place at Virginia Tech. While I am not an official Hokie, I graduated from Radford, my blood will always run maroon and orange. I lived in Blacksburg, VA for six years and VT was a huge part of my life. My husband actually attended VT for the first part of his college career and was actually a VT cheerleader...no laughing. :)

While life continues to go on I don't want anyone to forget the special people that were lost that day. Quick Update

Quick update then I am off to bed to snuggle with my hubby who is finally home from army reserve training. It has been a long and exhausting week and I haven't gotten much done since my kids and I have been sick...double ear infection, strep throat, and still not sure what mommy has. I only managed to get two things done this week, besides peel myself off the couch, and here they are.

The first pair of earrings are for a wonderful mommy who gave birth to triplets in February, yeah, I'm a little behind! You can read all about the Sather Family here.

These next pair of earrings are a custom pair of earrings that I made for a mother from her daughter to commemorate all her grandbabies, so sweet! I enjoyed making both these pairs of earrings and I hope that the women that receive them love them as much as I do! All right, I'm off to collapse into bed. Have a great Monday everyone!

Still Standing

Well, it has been a long week since I last blogged...if you even want to call it that! We have had quite a few orders to fill, yay! Our first international customer who also turned out to be our first non-paying customer....grrrr! The hubby has been gone only a few days for annual training with the army reserves and I'm already EXHAUSTED! The only good thing about him being gone was last night at 11:30 when I couldn't sleep I decided to create and these are what I have to show for it, well, that and some serious bags under my eyes. We have 12 more days until he returns home so cross your fingers that I make it. If nothing else there should at least be some more new jewelry created.

It has been a very busy week here for Ella Scott Jewels. We have had quite a few orders to fill, some new shop additions to create and a few other noteworthy projects. So lets get started!!!

These are one of my new spring favorites....our Sour Apple Earrings! These little beauties are made from 20x15mm green glass rondelles and hand made sterling silver earwires. They measure in at just over 2 1/2 inches from the top of the earwire.

These are probably my most time consuming earrings so far, but I LOVE THEM!!! These are our Extravagance Earrings! These beauties are sure to make you the hit of any party! Made with purple, orange, and gold glitter stripped hand blown glass beads and one of a kind handmade copper earwires you can't go wrong! These earrings measure in at about 2 1/4 inches from the top of the earwire for the extra bit of WOW!!!

Finally, this is one of my special projects that I have been working on that I just had to share. These earrings are for a special blogger that I have been following that has had some very heartbreaking experiences recently. The stones that I used, garnet and amethyst, both hold a special meaning and I hope that she enjoys wearing them as much as I have creating them.

Ladies I Need Your Help!

I received an email from one of my favorite local bead stores asking me to donate jewelry or beads to the The "Glass Slipper" Project and I am just dying to do it. The "Glass Slipper" Project is a part of the local "Cinderella Dreams" project which ensures that no young woman is denied her chance to experience a quintessential event of adolescence – attending her Prom. Necklaces, bracelets, earrings--anything sparkly is fair game and will be given new life by the girls who wear them on prom night.

Now my only problem is what to donate. It has been a long time since I have been in high school (we won't go there!) and I have no idea what the teenage trends are right now. I need your help ladies to decide what to make! Please take a look at my shop, Ella Scott Jewels, and see if you think that the there is anything in there a teenager would like. If not, give me some suggestions please. I just got some great candy colored stones in that I haven't gotten to use yet but can always use on this project. Any and all input is greatly appreciated, but hurry I really need to get these done this weekend...they are due by next weekend! THANKS!!!!

Let it snow, and snow, and snow, and snow!

We finally got snow! I haven't seen a snow like this since I was in high school so I am enjoying it quite a bit! We took the kiddos out this morning and they were loving it. My hubby even got a snow day...yippee! I'm not exactly sure how much we got because of the drifts but it is somewhere between 8 and 12 inches. Needless to say things in the city aren't moving quite as fast as they usually are right now, and that is just fine with me. So we are just going to enjoy the rest of the day relaxing, playing some more and drinking a little more hot chocolate. I hope everyone else is staying warm, it is really cold out there.

I don't know if you can see it or not, but that is a tree that fell overnight that is completely covering our driveway. Good times!

Dear Mr. Postman, Tomorrow when you see me I will be extra happy as I will be sending these lovelies to bride Fallon to enjoy. Along with 7 other sets that she ordered for her bridesmaids. This particular set happens to be Fallons and it has a little something extra on the bracelet to let everyone know it is hers, some gorgeous rhinestone roundels. Fallon came to me back in January with a special request on what she wanted, but couldn't seem to find anywhere. So we made her ideas a reality and here is the finished product. We can't wait to see this jewelry on all the beautiful ladies in Fallons October wedding! Congratulations Fallon and Tommy!!!
